Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS recommends national action on U=U

On December 12, 2024, at its 83rd meeting, the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) approved a detailed and powerful resolution recommending that the United States embrace and follow the “Multinational Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) Call-to-Action” (MUCA) and that Health and Human Services formally recognize and collaborate with a community-led multi-sector U=U National Task Force to follow the action steps outlined in the MUCA.  This is a significant step toward ensuring that the multi-level benefits of U=U are realized to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV and to leverage U=U as a critical tool for advancing each of the four strategic pillars of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative.

The resolution is an outcome of the special session on U=U at the 82nd meeting of PACHA, where PACHA and community members and federal officials attested to the power and potential of U=U for transforming lives and achieving national and global targets to end the HIV epidemic as a public health threat. The speakers and panelists also addressed the current gaps in U=U programming in the US and low US viral suppression rates, especially in comparison to other countries, and recommended strategies forward, including taking action on the MUCA.
